Destiny of the Heart

Epilogue

Heero sighed and stared at his cup of coffee as he sat in a local diner in the town that he was currently working in. It has been almost two months since he went to Relena and tried to get her to come here with him. He was in a way starting to regret leaving her. He expected to much from her and did something that he shouldn't have done, he slept with her then left and he probably lost her because of it.

He opened the neatly folded news paper on the table and started to page through it looking for any article the had her name in it. He knew damn well if she were to give up her position it would be front page news, but he still had to know that she was alright. He had decided against a tv in his house because he had planned on him and Relena having quality time together, so he relied on the paper or word on mouth from Max.

"Lost in you little world again Heero?"

Heero grumbled and cursed under his breath. "What do you want now Max?"

He watched as the stunning blond woman sat down in a chair next to him. Max, short for Maxine was the local town news reporter. It didn't take her very long to find out who Heero really was so he had befriended her in a way to keep her quiet. She flashed him that smile that he knew she was about to hit on him again.

"I have some news on your lady friend." she smiled at him.

"I'm not going out on a date with you." She has played this game before and he wasn't in the mood to put up with her. Heero took his eyes off of her still smiling face and looked over to see the waitress carrying his plate over to him. He thanked her and started to eat, ignoring the woman that sat across from him.

"So." Max spoke up. "Are you interested in the news or not?"

"No." Heero continued to eat as fast as he could so he could get away from her.

"You know with the way that your eating I would guess that your in a hurry to get home."

'Really what ever gave you that idea?' He thought. "I have some things to do at home."

"Need any help? You live in that big cabin all by yourself..."

"No. I'm fine you know that I like to be alone." Heero watched a group of people passed by the window. He seen something across the street that caught his attention. A person in a trench coat that had long platinum blond hair. He quickly grabbed his wallet and threw some money down on the table. "I talk to you later Max."

~

He knew that Heero had spotted him so he stood where he was and waited for him to cross the street. Once the were face to face the two of them stared at each other.

"What are you doing here Zechs?"

"I came to talk to you." He looked back at the diner and the woman that Heero had been sitting with.

Heero followed his gaze. "I'm not seeing her. She's..."

"The local town news reporter." Zechs finished. "Quite a beautiful woman, but I could clearly tell that she annoys you."

"You didn't come her to talk about her so why don't you get to it." Heero crossed his arms.

"I don't think that this is the appropriate place to talk." He looked to see that Max was staring at them.

Heero looked back and seen her then nodded. "My place." The last thing that they needed was for her to take notice of who Zechs was.

Zechs waited for Heero to cross the street and get into his truck. He then got in his car and followed Heero to his cabin, about a half hour drive from town. Once they got there Zechs was quite shocked to see how Heero had been living. He expected a small one room place just big enough for his needs. Instead he had a two story cabin. And once he seen the inside he became shocked all over again. The place was completely furnished and in good taste.

"I'll ask you again Zechs. What do you what?" Heero sat down in the living area and watched him.

"I was wrong about you Yuy."

"No you were right. I did bury myself in my work. And I broke her heart."

Zechs crossed the room and looked around. "I expected you to be doing mercenary or assassination work. Not this, living in a small town working for a small computer software company. I especially didn't expect you to remain on the earth." He looked back at Heero. "You make enough to pay for all of this?"

"No I used my life savings for this."

"For you and Relena." Zechs watched as Heero looked away from him. "You really expected her to come here and to be with you. Maybe she would have if you would have given her some time."

"Like you would have ever of allowed it."

"I don't make decisions for her anymore. I haven't seen Relena since that night that Maxwell found the two of you."

Heero looked at him totally shocked.

"Both she and Noin were angry with me about the way that I...handled things. I left. Noin is in charge of Relena's security now."

"I see. What do you want from me?"

"I just want to know a few things before I leave." Heero remained quiet waiting for Zechs continue. "You know that I have never really liked you, but I respect you as a soldier. Maybe that is the reason behind my actions. I thought that if you continued on the path that you were living it would be your downfall and you would take Relena with you." Zechs took a seat across from Heero. "I didn't want you involved with Relena when there was a very high chance that someone may hurt her because of you. She is too important to the people and to me. But, I can clearly see how much she means to you too."

Zechs stood back up. It was hard for him to remain in one spot in the same room with Heero, especially with what he was about to say.

"Maybe it is time for Relena to take care of herself. To worry about her own problems and not that of the people."

"What are you getting at Zechs?"

"Do you love my sister Yuy?" Zechs stared into Heero's eyes. He had once herd Relena say that Heero's eyes ever lied to the emotions he was feeling.

Heero couldn't believe that he was having this conversation with Zechs. "Yes."

"Yes of course you do. You would have never of gone threw such a drastic change in your lifestyle if you weren't serious."

"I don't consider it drastic. This is a time of peace not war. There is no need for someone like me out there waiting for a battle to take place. I decided to use what talent I had and to put it to use. To make a better life for me so I could enjoy life with Relena."

Zechs smirked and looked up the stairs. "This place is large enough for a family."

Heero crossed his arms and watched Zechs trying to figure out what the man was up to. "It's not something that I ruled out."

Zechs watched Heero for a few minutes before he spoke up again. "I'll be going now. I have a flight to catch." Zechs walked toward the door and stopped to look back at Heero, who still hadn't moved from the spot he was sitting. "Heero, I never got a chance to thank you for what you did for Relena. My stubbornness got in the way."

Heero nodded and he got up as Zechs opened the front door. Heero watched as he made his way to his car then drove off He stood there until he couldn't see the taillights anymore. "Just what are you up to Zechs?"

*****

Noin walked Relena to her office. The meeting that was held early that morning had tired the young lady and Noin was worried about her.

"Relena, you need a break. You have done nothing but bury yourself in your work that past two months."

"I'm fine Lucrezia. I just had a lot to catch up on since that month. Once everything is running smooth again then I'll take a vacation."

"But Relena.."

"I don't need a break, I'm fine. Now if you will excuse me I have a meeting to prepare for." Relena slammed her office door in frustration. She turned to walk to her desk and froze when she seen that her chair was occupied.

"Relena."

"What are you doing here Millardo?" Her voice was lightly traced with anger.

"Your still angry with me."

Relena walked toward her desk and slammed the folders that she had been carrying down on it. "What ever gave you that idea?"

He smiled and stood up. "Relena you didn't take my advice."

"What are you talking about?"

He leaned forward and placed his hands on her desk. "I told you back in hospital that you needed to worry about yourself."

"If this is another attempt that I need to go on vacation then you can just leave." Relena crossed her arms.

Millardo smirked at her stubbornness, she was so much like him when it came to her wanting to get her way. "You look like you need it, but that is not why I'm here."

"Really, then why are you here?"

"I came to apologize to you. I made a very poor judgment that caused me to loose two people that I love. I hurt you by taking away what made you happy. You were right. You are perfectly capable of making your own decisions. And from now on I will respect whatever you decided, as long as it doesn't involve releasing you security personal."

"Lucrezia still loves you. And even though you did hurt me, I still love you as well. I cant' stay mad at you forever. I have missed you these past six moths."

Millardo smiled and walked around her desk to face her. "You have some power behind that slap of yours."

Relena smiled. "I'm glad that Duo held me back. I felt bad the next morning."

They both smiled at each other before embracing in a hug. Once they released Millardo took a step back.

"I have something for you." He walked back to the desk and picked up a folder and handed it to her.

"What is it?"

"I believe that you have hired people to find this information out for you."

She opened the folder and held her breath. There were a few pictures of Heero and a report that had his whereabouts and what he has been doing the past six months on it. She walked over to her desk and sat down. She looked threw the pictures and read over the report she kept looking for a address but didn't see one.

"You found him?"

"You can say that."

"Why did you look for him?"

"I had to apologize to him."

"I can imagine how hard that must have been for you." she looked at one of the pictures of Heero that she still held in her hand.

"It wasn't that bad, and I believe that he and I can come to an understanding." Millardo walked beside her and leaned against her desk. "Relena, you miss him. You obviously want to be with him, but you think that keeping your promise to the people it the right thing to do." He reached into his pocket and pulled out folded piece of paper and handed it to her. "Maybe it is time for you to keep the promise that you made to your heart."

She opened the paper and seen an address on it. She smiled and stood up and hugged him. "And if I decided to go with my heart?"

"Everything will work out. Trust me. I want you to be happy. Even if it means that he will be taking care of you from now on."

Relena kissed him on the cheek. "I don't know why you are doing this, but thank you. I need to think things over." She smiled at him and placed a hand on his cheek. "You need to go and talk to Lucrezia."

"I will." He took her hand in his. "Will you walk with me to her office."

Relena smiled. "Sure." Relena grabbed the folder that Millardo gave her and held it tightly. She walked him the short distance down the hallway to Noin's office. Relena knocked on her door and gave her brothers hand a squeeze. She herd Noin voice speak up for whoever it was to enter. Relena opened the door and got a shocked look on Noins face.

"Relena is there something that I can do for you?"

"Yes." She moved aside so Millardo could enter. "You can talk to my brother and forgive him like I have."

"Zechs." Noin was totally shocked to see him.

"Noin." he greeted her with a small smile. "You've done an excellent job taking care of Relena. I couldn't have done better myself."

Relena smiled when she seen Lucrezia's face lighten up and she smiled at her brother. "If you two will excuse me I'm going to go home and think about a few things." She lightly tapped the folder she was carrying with her fingers.

"Don't forget your bodyguards Relena." Noin warned her.

"I won't." She smiled at Lucrezia and looked at her brother and walked out of the room hoping that the two of them would be able to work things out.

*****

Relena laid on her stomach on her bed and looked at the pictures that were spread out. She sighed and picked up one and rolled on her back holding the picture above her so she could look at it. She looked over Heero's features. Her brother was right, she missed him. She wanted to be with him. But could she really leave her job behind? She was only going to be twenty this year and the public still put her in the spot light. Everything that she did was always being watched. Her words being absorbed by so many people. Why do they need her to maintain peace? Peace isn't brought on by one person.

She got off of her bed and went out onto the balcony. She remembered when Heero came to her a few months ago. The look of determination in his eyes. The emotions that he was clearly showing. He loved her. He wanted them to be together and to have a family. He changed his life for them. But there was one thing that troubled her, he was right. She did put her promise before her own happiness.

She thought about what Millardo had told her. 'You need to worry about yourself.'

She looked down at the picture of him that she still held in her hand.

"Are you still waiting for me like you said you would Heero?"

She ran her fingers across the picture tracing his jaw line.

"Do you still love me?.....I still love you."

'Maybe it is time for you to keep the promise that you made to your heart.'

She walked back into her room and pulled out her suitcases. "I guess that there is only one way to find out." She threw one on the bed and unzipped it. She then rummaged threw her things, packing what she knew that she would defiantly want if she wound up staying. She could always have Millardo send the rest later.

After she finished packing her suitcase she had one of her bodyguards carry it downstairs for her. Relena called out for Pagan to get the car for her. He would be one person that she would miss terribly.

Relena thought about her job and the office that she was about to take. She ran to the small office downstairs and turned on the computer. She sat down behind the computer and hit the record button and started a message for Millardo to play for the public. She saved it on disk and pulled it out and placed it in a case.

Millardo and Noin were pulling to a stop in the driveway when Noin stared at the Relena's car. Pagan was putting away a suitcase in the trunk when they both got out of the car.

"Pagan, what's going on?"

"Oh, Ms. Noin, Mr. Millardo it's good to see you again. Miss Relena has decided to take a vacation."

"What?" Noin practically screamed. "How could she plan this without me. Was she planning on taking her bodyguards?"

"Noin. It's ok, I know where she is going?"

Lucrezia looked at him puzzled, then it hit her. "Does it involve a young man that happens to be a very good pilot?"

Zechs smirked.

Noin crossed her arms. "And you approve?"

"It's her decision to make." He was quite shocked when he felt Noins arms circle his neck.

"I'm glad to hear you say that." she whispered her breath tickling his ear.

They both turned to see Relena walking toward them. She had a huge smile on her face. "I'm glad to see that the two of you are working things out." She stopped in front of Noin. "Lucrezia, thank you for everything that you have done for me." She hugged her. "Take care of my brother for me."

Relena stopped by Millardo and pulled out the disk. "Play this for everyone."

He took if from her and hugged her. "Are you sure this is what you want?"

"Yes." She smiled at him.

He knew with the look in her eyes she was making the right decision for her. "If for any reason you want to come home then give me a call. I can get a plane there in a few hours."

"Ok, but that won't be necessary."

"Miss Relena, your flight leaves in a half hour."

She gave both her brother and Lucrezia another hug before getting in to the car. Relena waved to them as the car drove off. She smiled when she seen Lucrezia take Millardo's hand and lead him toward the house.

*****

Later that evening after Heero got of work he was about to head home when he decided that he wasn't in the mood to make dinner. So once again he went to the diner and hoped that Max wasn't around. The woman always knew when he got off work and wherever he stopped in town she just happened to show up.

Heero walked in and looked around. He didn't see her. The waitress that usually served him walked over to him.

"She's not here." She smiled at him. "The usual?"

"Sure." Heero let out a sigh of relief and walked over to a small table away from everyone else. Maybe if he didn't sit in his usual spot then she would think that he wasn't there.

Heero was actually surprised that he got to eat alone tonight. He glanced at the clock that hung on the wall behind him. A whole half hour without her walking in on him. He actually smiled. 'Maybe she got the hint finally.' He looked outside to see that it was getting dark.

The waitress came to get his plate. She laid down that days newspaper for him and filled up his coffee cup, then walked off and turned the tv on.

Heero did his usual routine looking over articles in the paper. Nothing was mentioned today about her. He picked up his coffee and was about to take a drink when something that was on the tv caught his attention. Max was making a statement about a special report. Heero smirked. 'So that's where you been.'

He took a drink of his coffee and sat the cup down. He then herd the voice of his angel. He looked back at the tv and seen Relena. Her words echoing in his mind.

"I Relena Darlian am making this announcement to inform you the people of the earth and our neighboring colonies, that I will not be able to accept office as Foreign Minister. I will also be stepping down from my position as Vice Foreign Minister. The reason is one of personal nature and not one for you to worry about. I believe that the peace that has been established......"

Heero didn't care to hear anymore of her statement. He paid for his dinner, leaving the waitress a large tip and took off the get home. He had to pack and get to her. He had to know if the reason she was leaving was so they could be together and not something more drastic.

He pulled his truck to a stop and got out turning the lights off. He stopped in his tracks when he seen that the lights were on in his cabin. The door started to open and on instinct Heero went to grab for his gun only to remember that he didn't carry one any longer. 'Shit.' This was the only reason that he wished that he still carried one.

He felt his heart stop at the sight before him. Relena stood on the porch and smiled at him.

"Hello Heero." She walked down the steps and toward him.

She slowly approach him, but she couldn't take it anymore she had to be close to him, she had to touch him. She ran the rest of the distance and threw her arms around him.

"Relena." He held her close against him.

She looked into this eyes and smiled. "I love you Heero."

Heero placed his hands gently on her face and leaned in and kissed her softly on the lips. "I love you too."

Relena unlocked her arms from his back and wrapped them around his neck pulling him back toward her for another kiss. They both deepened the kiss. Relena moaned as she felt Heero's hands travel up her shirt. She could feel her heart start to race from the feeling of his touch. She pulled back and took his hands in hers.

"Lets go inside." She purred seductively.

Heero remembered what happened the first time that she said that to him. He smirked at the thought and nodded. He grabbed her and picked her up throwing her over his shoulder. She screamed in shock then broke down giggling as he carried her into the cabin, slamming the door behind him.
