I've warned you, now, continuing. I honestly never understand people who say Heero & Duo are more than friends, just because they don't like Relena. That IS a pity, man. Because Heero + Relena relationship is a symbol of the theme of GW. It is not a matter of 'well-matched' or 'looking-good' relationship. It is DIRECTLY related to the theme.
I know I needn't go through all the abundant evidence about their relationship and all. Many sites in detail explained so well. But, I think I need to mention one thing: about the theme and their romance. First of all, as I said in "symbolism in GW" page in "Plot" section, (if you didn't read it, you'd better) This GW series can be interpreted from two main perspective- war and peace. Heero as a warrier and Relena as a peacemaker are definitely designed by the GW creator with a purpose. Again, as I said in "symbolism" page, war and peace come from each other, are followed by each other, and are completed by each other. They are two things people are born with, and they are two things the human nature naturally seek for.
Now, Heero as a warrier, a perfect killer, is not needed in the peaceful world Relena created, and that's why he leaves her in the end of Endless Waltz, and Heero sees Relena just as a lady that needs to be protected by a knight and a symbol of peace. THIS is what many Yaoi fans interpret about their relationship. If so, they are regarding GW as a romance anime. It's truly a pity because evidently most of yaoi fans are intelligent yet they don't see an obvious thing. I'm not really Relena's big fan and I know Heero and Duo look good together. Nevertheless, as a 'proud-to-be' GW fan, I can't agree with a theory that is against the official (not Dojinshi) story.
Let's look at the interpretation in the previous paragraph. It is true that a perfect soldier would not be needed in the peaceful world. But, Heero is needed. In two ways: as a person and as a true warrier. Heero Yuy before he met Relena and Heero Yuy after he met Relena are NOT the same person. A most precious and valuable part of his mind, emotions - an assassin of real Heero Yuy, who raised Heero up, once commented, "Emotions are most important... I always do things based on my emotions." It shouldn't mean we can do whatever we want to do. It is a kind of paradox, meaning the life would be hard and painful, and emotions are so fragile in the world of war and battle. Heero Yuy, with his kind and gentle mind, couldn't survive with his emotions. They rebelled and they hid themselves until there was an incidence telling them there might be a possibility for them to survive without hiding - Relena. It was hide-and-seek indeed, to get the emotions out of him. Relena made him a person, though (fortunately). More, Relena taught him what a true warrier should be. He was by all means a perfect soldier, but he lacked in one thing - care towards others, care towards people, not a mission. Without that, there's no objective in fighting. You don't care for people, but you care for a fact that you're fighting - it can go to the extreme - 'who are my enemies?' A soldier is one who fights, but a warrier is one who also designs a fight. Since peace is 'another war', Heero should learn how to fight and survive THERE, and guess what, he learns it from Relena.
* Believe me, he was changed a lot !! Just before he came to rescue Relena in Libra, he seemed lost in thought (about Relena~~). Also, he actually complimented Relena in Libra! (".. I'm nothing compared to you... ") That famous Teddy Bear[_] So sweet--
Second point, the peaceful world is not what Relena alone created. It's actually Heero who was 'a soul of colonies' as Quatre put it. It is mandatory that he participate in the world he created!
And people, the reason why Heero left is NOT because he had nothing to do with Relena any more. On the contrary, his life was directly and firmly related to Relena by then. Than why did he leave? There are three theories - one is believed by many non-yaoi fans: because he wanted to protect Relena from far away. Another non-yaoi theory: because he didn't think he deserves Relena. I partly agree with both, but my theory is: Heero had something else to do. He had to participate rebuilding the relationship between colonies and earthsphere. Do you think Endless Waltz is the end of everything? No. That's why it's Endless Waltz. It's another battle and Heero is absolutely necessary there as a soldier of peace. That exactly matches with Relena's plan, too.
Here, don't misunderstand that these are the evidence of their romance. Romance is not a theory. I'm just pointing the part where their romance is related to the theme of GW. I have no intention of repeating what other sites proved about their feelings toward each other with various quotes and pictures.
Lastly, Relena is NOT a symbol of peace. In fact, Heero is. He is 'a soul of colonies', a 'leader' who adopted a legendary leader of colonies, an example of 'miserable war child', and a symbol of freedom. True, people in colonies don't think so. They see Relena as a symbol of peace because she appears to be. But she is a DESIGNER, not a symbol. Heero is the one who realized Relena's dream of peace. He is NOT 'I-would-not-have-done-it-if-you-were-not-with-me' character. He is who has done it. He himself fights for peace, creates peace, becomes 'the soul of colonies', suddenly sees Relena as a symbol of peace, and run away? That IS generally called nonsense. (If it offended you, so sorry. I hold nothing against anyone. I just hold something against the absurd theories.)
